Gilbert De Decker overcame Houston Country Club’s Gregory Pipkin by a few shots in a thrilling final day battle to win his first World Amateur Tour title for his 10th attempt.
The Belgian recorded a magnificent closing round of 33 points, scoring 63 in total over the two days. He recorded his first top 10 earlier this season at The Abu Dhabi Inaugural Championship in very difficult conditions and continued with a super victory here at the K Club.
“It’ s been a great moment on the golf course today” said De Decker “as I was really focused on my game except three or four holes at the turn. My caddy was really helpful which gave me a good advantage”.
Gregory Pipkin, winner of the Links Championship back in June, took the lead the day before over at Portmarnock Golf Club. Although he played a great game, he came just a little bit short and left the victory to Europe.
“I wish I could have had a revenge for the USA after the European Team won back in 2006, but Gilbert was too good this time” said the Texan. Pipkin ended up capturing the Senior Series Trophy and with a second place overall hit the top of the 2017 World Amateur Tour Ranking. For his first appearance on the Tour, Christophe Guedon played a very consistent game over the two days, in spite of a knee injury since the end of the 1st round. He finishes 3rd to claim the 2nd Series Trophy.
In the Ladies Series, South African Lizanne Heydenrych played a splendid two rounds winning her 4th trophy on the World Amateur Tour.
All players are now looking forward to The Andalucia Classic Championship from October 26th to 29th at fabulous Sotogrande & Valderrama Clubs. In the meantime, Gilbert De Decker will have the privilege to visit top Club Fitter Francois Magne who offers each tournament’s winner a private fitting and a set of Gimar Clubs.
