Only one week after the Andalucia Masters, Bonmont Golf Club resident Jean-Michel Barbey shot a wonderful second round of 35 points to capture the Andalucia Classic Championship, 5th leg of the World Amateur Tour.
“Playing the Sotogrande old course in such beautiful conditions was a real pleasure and my game was really good all day”. Two birdies on number eight and twelve, followed by four pars gave Barbey an ideal position to secure a maiden victory for his first appearance this year.
“The ambiance was so amazing, the organization absolutely perfect and the fight very intense. I look forward to coming back soon to enjoy more competitive golf “ said Jean-Michel Barbey.
After a disappointing first round, Joyenval resident Henri Le Menestrel, started the second round in a splendid manner with 3 birdies on the front nine and 19 points total, putting a lot of pressure on Barbey’s shoulders. The end of the round happened to be a little bit disappointing with two mistakes on 11 and 15 which gave the Swiss player a clear way for winning.
2016 World Amateur Tour champion Yann Robin was in contention during both days playing solid golf until he made two mistakes on 15 and 16 offering a warm welcome to our new winner.
After winning in Ireland, Belgian Gilbert De Decker continued to play a very solid golf this week as he finished 5thand a first place in the 2nd Series.
For his third participation this year in the World Amateur Tour, Eric Peugeot played a consistent golf this week to capture the senior trophy.
In the Ladies Series, the competition was also intense and nobody could say who would become the 2017 champion. Golf de Morfontaine member’s iconic model Ines Sastre finally ended with 5 points stableford over the last three all and captured the trophy with respectively one and two shots ahead of Elizabeth Agha and Nathalie Mary.
“It was just fabulous to be able to play here at both Valderrama and Sotogrande in this beautiful event that reminded me so much of the Dunhill Links Championship”.
Positions at the Top of the World Amateur Tour ranking have changed significantly after this week. Gilbert De Decker took a short advantage over Gregory Pipkin and Yann Robin very discreet from the beginning of the year seems to be ready for the season ending. In the Ladies Series we have now three co-leaders with Stéphanie Viscolo, Lizanne Heydenrych, and Ines Sastre.
