Oitavos Dunes Resort & Golf *****

Oitavos Dunes is owned and run by the Champalimaud family, this five-star hotel is encircled by the golf course. But this is not your traditional golf hotel — it’s not even your traditional hotel. It looks more like a city art gallery, or perhaps the headquarters of a software company, built in the sand dunes.

Set on a 168-acre estate of waving dune grasses and stone pines on Portugal’s West Atlantic coast, within the Sintra Cascais National Park. It’s five minutes’ from the stylish seaside town of Cascais and 20 minutes west of Lisbon.

Portuguese architect José Amaral Anahory has come up with an uncompromisingly modern construction of steel and glass, its spacious, open-plan interior divided by moveable panels and flooded with natural light. The colour palette is inspired by the sky and the ocean: in other words, blue – blue floors, blue walls, blue furnishings – with flashes of silver and grey. It’s original, cosmopolitan and starkly beautiful.

No doubt you will enjoy this wonderful place.

Oitavos Dunes Golf course – par 72, 7003 yards

Oitavos Dunes Golf Course is the number one golf course in Portugal. It  lies within the beautiful Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The course is set amongst pine woods and reforested dunes in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is also located by the sea and you can enjoy ocean views at all times and Cabo da Roca, the most western point in continental Europe, can be seen from a number of holes. Oitavos Dunes Golf Course has been carefully crafted with a well thought layout and fits perfectly into its surroundings. This is a stunning course which must be played.

Cascias World Amateur Cascais #worldamateurtour

Cascais and Estoril, or the coast north of Lisbon, became one of the most cosmopolitan and touristic places in Portugal ever since King Luís I chose the bay for his summer residence in the late 19th century.

The mild climate and an annual average of 260 rainless days were surely strong reasons for his choice and for the most affluent families of the time to follow the royal family and set up their villas and mansions there. It’s worth going on a stroll around town to get a feel for the atmosphere of that period.

To get there, follow the waterfront road from Lisbon to Cascais or take the train. It’s a very scenic route, always hugging the River Tagus and the busy beaches of the Estoril coast. En route, you will pass various forts erected to defend the capital, providing crossfire with the Bugio Fort, right in the middle of the river mouth, between Santo Amaro, on one side, and Trafaria, on the opposite bank.

Maiden Victory for Dominique Rey at West Cliffs Golf Links

For its first tournament in Portugal, the World Amateur Tour offered its players the opportunity to discover West Cliffs, first European course designed by a woman, Cynthia Dye, daughter of famous American architect Pete Dye.  She ingeniously took advantage of one of the the most beautiful landscapes in Portugal to design a seaside links along the silver coast, voted “World’s best New Golf Course” at the 2017 World Golf Awards.

This second edition of the 2018 World Amateur Tour welcomed seven new members of Swiss, Russian and Chinese nationalities, including two new ladies strengthening the Women’s Series.

After a tight race in the first round, for his fourth participation on the Tour, Christophe Guedon from Cannes Mandelieu took the lead, three points ahead of Dominique Rey (Switzerland).  To close the first round, the players met in a unique architect villa to mingle in a warm and friendly atmosphere, enjoying fabulous sushi and Portuguese specialties. The opening dinner was a great success.

In perfect weather conditions, the second round was going to be a superb fight between the leaders. Christophe Guedon was once again in contention until the 10th hole playing consistently, but experienced Swiss’ Dominique Rey produced a considerable effort to keep the contact and finally took a big advantage on the 15th hole with an eagle 3.

Dominique Rey finished with a two-point advantage over Guedon who would finally win the 2nd Series division. Disadvantaged by a hand injury, Jean-Michel Barbey, winner of last year’s Andalucia Classic Championship was quite disappointed as he was unable to do better than scoring only 8 points on the back nine. He finished 9 points behind the leader and seized the Senior Series trophy.

The Order of Merit has slightly shifted with Rey joining Pipkin at the top of the ranking with this victory. In the Women Series Anne-Catherine Robin joined Stéphanie Chapon on top of the ranking by winning the tournament with 44 points in stableford.

To perfectly end this second edition, Michelin Star Chef Rui Paula honoured the World Amateur Tour by coming onto the Bom Sucesso Resort to concoct an exquisite gala dinner. Many thanks to Rui Paula and his team for taking the time to mingle with our players and attend to their every need.

Next stop will take place at the very exclusive and private Renaissance Club in Scotland, hosted by member and owner Jerry Sarvadi, from June 14th to 17th.

No doubt that Sarvadi will give his best at home to jump on top of the 2018 ranking.
