Only a couple of weeks before welcoming the best European Tour players, the Oitavos Dunes was chosen to welcome the 2nd leg of the 2019 World Amateur Tour for the Portuguese Championship.
The beautiful Links, designed by Arthur Hills offered the players a real test as the weather conditions over the first day were more of a Scottish style than the traditional Portuguese spring.
As the first round started, Gilbert De Decker played a very consistent golf, in spite of the wind, to surge into the lead after the first 18 holes, shooting birdies on 6,7,8 and 13 to close his round with 32 points, one shot ahead of Sylvain Berger-Duquene.
On the second round, a new course was offered to the players as the weather conditions drastically improved, unveiling the beauty and changing colors of Oitavos Dunes Links.
After 10 holes Gilbert De Decker would loose a couple of shots over Berger-Duquene before entering into the last nine holes.
Franck Henouda, for his second participation on the Tour, was also in a very good position and put himself in contention giving him a chance to win.
The suspense was very high over the last nine holes and we could feet an intense pressure as we stepped into the final three holes.
Sylvain Berger-Duquene was the most accurate player over the last 9 holes and even with a double bogey on the 18thhe would win by one point.
Franck Henouda finished second with a total of 63 points, winning the Seniors Trophy.
Christophe Chapon also produced a very good last round with a total of 61 points and won the 2ndSeries prize.
The Portuguese Championship is Sylvain Berger Duquene’s first win and there is no doubt that he is going to be one of the challengers for the 2019 World Amateur Tour Title.
In The ladies Series, the tournament offered a very intense battle between the two Russians, Irina Nesterova and Dubai Inaugural Champion Yulia Golubeva.
Yulia Golubeva played a great back nine with two birdies on n°12 and n°15, finishing with a total of 58 points and enjoyed her second consecutive win this year.
The 2019 World Amateur Tour ranking doesn’t change a lot as Marco Saviozzi keeps the top spot with 147 133 pts. followed by Sylvain Berger-Duquene who jumped at the second place with 117 000 pts followed by Christophe Guedon with 100 920 pts.
In the ladies ranking Yulia Golubeva is already making a big move to the title as she keeps the first place with a total of 233 333 pts. Irina Nesterova is second with 127 600 pts followed by Stéphanie Viscolo with 42 400 pts .
