Scandinavian Amateur Golf Championship Overview

Scandinavian amateur golf runs on a short, intense season. This page covers what that means for a visiting player: when championships are held, what the courses ask for, and where the region's leading amateur events actually sit in the European calendar.

The season, and why it is shaped that way

Daylight and ground conditions set the calendar. The competitive season in the Nordic countries runs from late spring to early autumn, which compresses championship golf into roughly fifteen weeks. Two things follow. Fields are busier in June and July than anywhere else in Europe, and courses are often at their firmest in late summer rather than mid-season.

Where the region sits in European amateur golf

The European Amateur Championship, run by the European Golf Association, rotates around its member federations, and Nordic venues are a regular part of that rotation. The 2025 championship was played at Vasatorp in Sweden, won by Filip Jakubčík by three shots, and the 2026 edition was hosted by the Finnish Golf Union at Linna Golf from 24 to 27 June. The 2027 championship moves to Ganton in Yorkshire from 23 to 26 June (European Golf Association). The European Amateur Team Championship is a separate event; its 2026 edition was played at Estonian Golf and Country Club in Tallinn from 7 to 11 July.

If your aim is ranking points rather than a holiday, this distinction matters. Whether any given event is a Counting Event for the World Amateur Golf Ranking is decided by the WAGR Committee against published criteria, and team match play events do not add a divisor, which changes how a result affects your average.

What the courses ask for

  • Wind management over raw distance. Coastal courses in the region are rarely long by modern standards and rarely calm.
  • A low, controlled ball flight. Useful everywhere on links-style ground, essential when the fairways are running.
  • Patience with slow greens early and fast greens late. Green speed changes through a short season more than it does in milder climates.
  • Reading forest holes. Inland Nordic courses are often cut through pine, where the wind at the top of the trees is not the wind at ball level.

Preparing for a northern championship week

  1. Check the local rules sheet for preferred lies early in the season.
  2. Arrive a day earlier than you would further south: travel to regional venues often involves a connection and a drive.
  3. Expect long evenings. Practice time after a round is generous in June, and players who have travelled often overuse it.
  4. Pack for two climates. A 22-degree morning and a 10-degree squall in the same round is normal.

Status and prizes, before you enter

Scandinavian federation events are scratch competitions, so prize rules apply directly. Under the Rules of Amateur Status effective January 2022, an amateur may accept a non-cash prize up to £700 or US$1,000 per competition, prize money only within that limit in scratch competitions and not at all in handicap competitions, with trophies excluded from the limit. National bodies may set lower limits, so read the entry conditions of the specific federation.
